- INTRODUCTION
-
- PopSaurus is a Pop-up thesaurus. With it you can - at any time - pop
- up a screen and search the thesaurus for just the right word to use
- in your writing. PopSaurus has three modes of operation:
-
- STAND ALONE
- By typing "PS" at the MSDOS command line PopSaurus will allow you
- to type in words and find synonyms for them.
-
- ONE SHOT
- By typing ps and a word at the MSDOS command line (i.e. "PS BABY")
- PopSaurus will display a list of synonyms for that word (if it can
- find it) and immediately quit. It is a quick-and-dirty way to look
- for a synonym.
-
- RESIDENT
- Resident is by far the most useful mode. By typing "PS -R" at the
- MSDOS command line, PopSaurus becomes resident in memory and ready
- for activation. When you are working with your favorite word
- processor or text editor, you can pop up PopSaurus and look for the
- right word to use in every situation. But that isn't all it will do.
- If the cursor is positioned on or after a word PopSaurus will assume
- that is the word you want to find synonyms for and display the entries
- for it. Cursor around to select the word you want and press [F1].
- Presto! You are back in your program and the original word has been
- replaced with the new one you selected.
-
- PopSaurus currently has 8,282 entry points into 70,793 words.
- In the resident mode it takes up less than 10K of RAM. Not much
- considering the functionality.
-
-
- FILE LIST
-
- PopSaurus comes with the following files:
-
- PS.EXE The PopSaurus Program.
- PS.SAR The thesaurus containing all the words.
- PS.DOC This manual.
- REGISTER.DOC PopSaurus registration form.
- CONFIGPS.EXE PopSaurus configuration program.
-
-
- REQUIREMENTS
-
- The minimum system requirements to run PopSaurus are:
-
- 256K of RAM
- Hard drive (or floppy ** LARGER ** than 360K)
- MSDOS/PCDOS version 2.1 or higher
-
- A hard drive is highly recommended. On a floppy drive system the
- disk containing the thesaurus (PS.SAR) must be in the drive it was
- in when PopSaurus was started. Also there must be enough free space
- on the floppy to hold PopSaurus temporary swap file, approximately 24K,
- when running in the resident mode. The swap file is how PopSaurus
- gets away with using less than 10K of RAM when resident.
-

-
-
- INSTALLATION
-
- Two Disk Drive System Installation
-
- Start up you computer with a DOS disk in drive A:. Now place a
- blank disk in drive B: and type: "FORMAT B:"
-
- When the formatting is finished place the disk containing PopSaurus
- in drive A: and use the following commands: "COPY PS.EXE B:" and
- "COPY PS.SAR B:"
-
- You now have a PopSaurus working disk. Put your master PopSaurus
- disk away in a safe place.
-
-
- Hard Drive System Installation
-
- To install PopSaurus on your hard drive you can do one of two things.
- Install it in the subdirectory that holds your msdos/pcdos external
- commands or install it in its own subdirectory. Installing it in
- the MSDOS command directory is the easiest and most convenient.
-
- Most people with hard drives have a subdirectory called DOS, MSDOS,
- PCDOS, BIN, or something similar they use to store the external
- DOS commands (i.e. FORMAT, DISKCOPY and so on). It usually already
- has the path pointing at it. If that is how you have your hard drive
- set up, copy the following files into the directory: "PS.EXE" and
- "PS.SAR".
-
- If you do not have your external commands in the path or you do
- not wish to add PopSaurus into your DOS directory you can make a
- subdirectory just for PopSaurus. Call it whatever you like; it
- doesn't matter to PopSaurus.
-
- You can either change to the directory that PopSaurus is in to start
- it or you can add/change the path command in you AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
- By doing so you can use PopSaurus from any where (i.e. in your word
- processor's subdirectory, from a from another disk). Using a text
- editor add the following line to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:
-
- PATH=C:\PS
-
- That is assuming you called the subdirectory that you copied
- PopSaurus into PS on your C: drive. It you called the directory
- something else or place it on a different hard drive, change the
- name of the drive and subdirectory accordingly.
-
- If you already have a path command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file add
- the PopSaurus directory by separating it from the other directories
- with a semicolon:
-
- PATH=C:\MSDOS;C:\TURBO;C:\PS
-
- Once you have rebooted the system so that the PopSaurus subdirectory
- is added to the path you can use PopSaurus from any subdirectory.

-
- QUICK START INSTRUCTIONS
-
- For those who do not like to read manuals, here are the instructions
- to get PopSaurus running. The command keys are listed on the screen.
- For more in depth instructions on using PopSaurus please read the
- "How To Use PopSaurus" section of the manual.
-
- At the DOS Prompt type one of the following:
-
- PS (Stand alone mode)
- PS word (One shot mode)
- PS -r (Resident mode)
-
- Starting PopSaurus without anything on the command line will place
- you in the stand alone mode. In the stand alone mode you can type
- in words and use the right and left arrow keys to move around the
- entry for the words to search the thesaurus.
-
- Starting PopSaurus with a word on the command line will cause it
- to search the thesaurus for that word and display the entry for
- it or the word in the thesaurus that is alphabetically the next
- word in the thesaurus if there is no entry for the word you were
- looking up.
-
- Starting PopSaurus with a -r (or -r) on the command line will place
- it in the resident mode. In other words it will load and stay in
- memory waiting for you to use it. You can pop it up at any time by
- pressing the CTRL-ALT keys and then the TAB key. Alternately if you
- have used the CONFIGPS.EXE program to change the hotkey combination
- then you should use that combination instead. If the cursor is on a
- word it will be the word PopSaurus will search the thesaurus for.
- Once the screen is up you can use PopSaurus normally. This mode has
- one more feature. If you find a word you would rather use, you can
- highlight it and press the [F1] key. PopSaurus will exit back to
- where you started it from and replace the original word with the
- one you have selected.
-

-
-
-
- How to use PopSaurus
-
- PopSaurus has three modes of operation:
-
- One Shot
- Stand Alone
- Resident
-
-
- Of the three modes One Shot is the easiest to explain and consequently
- the least useful. The other two modes operate similarly with the
- except that the "resident" mode will pop up over other programs and
- has the ability to replace a word in the program it was popped up over.
-
-
- ONE SHOT MODE
-
- The One Shot mode is simple to use. At the MSDOS command prompt
- type in PS and a word then press RETURN. PopSaurus will search the
- thesaurus file and print the entry for that word. If the word you
- were looking for was not found, the entry for the word that would
- follow it in the thesaurus will be printed.
-
- As an example if you typed the following:
- C> PS bar
-
- PopSaurus would print an entry similar to the following:
-
- Word: "BAR"
-
- {Noun}
- 1. [LONG NARROW OBJECT] STAKE, STICK, POLE, SPAR, RAIL, LEVER,ROD,
- CROWBAR.
- 2. [A TAVERN] TAVERN, LOUNGE, SALOON, CANTEEN, PUB.
- 3. [LEGAL PROFESSION] LAWYERS, COUNSELORS, BARRISTERS, SOLICITORS,
- JURISTS, JUDICIARY.
- 4. [AN OBSTRUCTION] HINDRANCE, OBSTACLE, HURDLE, BARRIER.
-
- {Verb}
- 1. [TO OBSTRUCT] BARRICADE, DAM, FENCE, BOLT, STOP, IMPEDE.
- 2. [TO FORBID] BAN, FORBID, DENY, REFUSE, PREVENT, STOP, EXCLUDE,
- EXILE, OUTLAW, CONDEMN, DISCOURAGE.
- 3. [TO CLOSE] SHUT, LOCK, SEAL, CLOSE.
-
- Page 5
-
-
-
- Some of the words would be in yellow on a color monitor or high
- intensity on a monochrome monitor. Those are words that have further
- entries. In the above example if the word "RAIL" had an entry
- associated with it, it would be yellow (or high intensity).
- You could then use PopSaurus in the One Shot mode again with:
-
- C> PS rail
-
- to look at the entry for "RAIL". It is not the easiest way to do
- multiple searches into the thesaurus and that is why it is called
- the One Shot mode; it is cumbersome when you're looking up more than
- one word. For more power and ease of us doing multiple searches, use
- PopSaurus in the Stand Alone mode.
-
-
- STAND ALONE
-
- PopSaurus is much more convenient in the Stand Alone mode. When you
- start PopSaurus without entering either a word or "-r" on the command
- line, PopSaurus will enter the Stand Alone mode. Once loaded,
- PopSaurus will display a screen with the following commands listed at
- the bottom of the display:
-
- Word to look up: _ PgUp - Prev Word <,> - To Move
- PgDn - Next Word ESC - To Back Up
- RETURN - To search F10 - To Quit
-
-
- Now just type in the word to look up and press RETURN. PopSaurus
- will scan the thesaurus and display the entry for the word you
- entered on the top part of the screen. If the word you were looking
- for was not found the next word (alphabetically) in the thesaurus is
- displayed instead. Assuming you had typed in "SIGN" and pressed
- [RETURN] you will have a list of words similar to this displayed:
-
- Word: "SIGN"
-
- {Noun}
- 1. [A SIGNAL] INDICATION, CLUE, OMEN, PREMONITION, FOREBODING,
- FOREKNOWLEDGE, TOKEN, PROPHECY, SYMBOL, WARNING,
- FLAG, BEACON, SIGNAL.
- 2. [AN EMBLEM] EMBLEM, INSIGNIA, BADGE, CREST.
- 3. [A SYMBOL] TYPE, SENSE, TOKEN.
-
- {Verb}
- 1. [AUTHORIZE] APPROVE, ENDORSE, CONFIRM, ACKNOWLEDGE.
- 2. [INDICATE] MEAN, EXPRESS, SIGNIFY, SIGNAL.
- 3. [HIRE] ENGAGE, HIRE, CONTRACT, EMPLOY.
-
-
- Some of the words will be displayed in yellow on a color monitor or
- high intensity on a monochrome monitor. Those are words that have
- further thesaurus entries for them. Use the left and right arrow
- keys to move around the list and select a word for it to look up.
- Once you have the desired word high-lighted press [RETURN] to find
- the thesaurus entry. If you press RETURN and nothing happens it is
- because you have a non-yellow (or normal intensity) word high-lighted
- and there is not an entry for it.
- Page 6
-
-
-
- For example if you were to high-light the word "ENDORSE" by moving to
- it using the left and right arrow keys and then to press [RETURN],
- the display would change to something like the following:
-
- Word: "ENDORSE"
-
- {Verb}
- 1. [ONE'S NAME] SIGN, UNDERWRITE, NOTARIZE.
- 2. [ACTIVE SUPPORT] APPROVE, CONFIRM, SANCTION, SATISFY,
- GUARANTEE, UNDERWRITE.
-
- You can also use the Page Up and Page Down keys to move to the next
- or pervious word (alphabetically) in the thesaurus and search it that
- way.
-
- If you have used RETURN to move from one entry to the next you can
- use the [ESC] key to move back to the previous entry.
-
- At anytime you can use the Backspace key to erase the current word
- and type in a new one. Press [RETURN] and that word will be looked
- up for you.
-
- The [F10] key will quit PopSaurus and return you to the DOS prompt.
-
- Page 7
-
-
-
- RESIDENT
-
- To place PopSaurus in the Resident mode start it by typing:
-
- PS -r
-
- PopSaurus will load itself into memory and return to the DOS prompt.
- Now you can use PopSaurus from inside of any application that you use.
- The exception is that you cannot bring PopSaurus up when you are in a
- graphics based program (i.e. a word processor that runs with a graphics
- display instead of text mode).
-
- To bring PopSaurus up, press the CTRL-ALT-TAB keys all at the same
- time. In other words hold down the CTRL and ALT keys and then press
- the TAB key. On some keyboards the TAB key is not labeled but you
- can find it by looking for the key that has two arrows on it, one
- pointing left and the other pointing right. If you have used the
- CONFIGPS program to change the hot key you must use that key
- combination instead.
-
- Once you press the hot key combination PopSaurus will take control
- of the screen and then function just as it does in the Stand Alone
- mode with a few exceptions:
-
- If the cursor is positioned on or just after a word it will look up
- that word and display the thesaurus entry for it.
-
- There is also one extra command in the resident mode. Added to the
- commands at the bottom of the display you will see the [F1] key listed.
- Like the [F10] key it exits PopSaurus, but in addition to quitting it
- will replace the word that was under the cursor when you popped it up
- with the word that you have highlighted when you press the [F1] key.
-
- If you do not want to replace the word quit PopSaurus with the use
- of the [F10] key.

-
-
-
- WARNINGS AND INFORMATION
-
- PopSaurus creates a temporary swap file to hold itself in when it is
- not popped up. The file name is PS.SWP. If you delete this file
- PopSaurus will not pop up when you press the CTRL-ALT-TAB keys (or
- whatever combination you may have changed it to with the CONFIGPS
- program). Instead it will just beep at you. It will do the same
- thing if you have it installed on a floppy and remove the floppy
- contains the temporary file.
-
- The file is placed at the location that PopSaurus finds the PS.SAR
- file. Either somewhere in the PATH= or where the environment variable
- PS tells it to look for the PS.SAR file. If it cannot be located in
- either of those locations but can be found in the current directory
- the PS.SWP file will be located there as well.
-
- PopSaurus was created with the aid of the TSR's Made Easy routines
- sold by TurboPower Software.
